Tata Sierra EV Pros and Cons

A genuinely honest breakdown of what works and what doesn't on the Tata Sierra EV, from its 622-litre boot to its AWD pricing trap.

Every review site will tell you the Tata Sierra EV has a 665 km claimed range and starts at Rs 18.79 lakh. What they don’t always tell you plainly is which of those numbers actually matter in daily ownership and which are just good marketing copy. This is a straight, unhedged pros and cons breakdown, the kind of thing an honest dealer would tell you over a cup of chai rather than what’s printed in the brochure.

Pros

Genuinely Best-in-Class Boot and Storage Space

The 622-litre boot on the Sierra EV is a real advantage, not a rounding error against rivals. Add in the frunk, 55 litres on the RWD variants and 35 litres on AWD, and you’ve got storage that most electric SUVs in this price bracket simply can’t match. If you’re a family that actually travels with luggage rather than just commutes, this is one of the few specs on this list you’ll notice in real life every single trip, not just on a comparison chart.

Strong Claimed Range Across the Lineup

Even the base 63 kWh battery claims 565 km on the MIDC cycle, and the 75 kWh pack pushes that to 665 km. Compare that against the Hyundai Creta Electric’s 473 km claim, and the Sierra EV has a real edge on paper. Yes, real-world numbers will land lower, they always do, but starting from a higher claimed baseline generally means a higher real-world floor too. For buyers who’ve held off on EVs specifically because of range anxiety, this is a genuinely reassuring number to work with.

AWD With Actual Off-Road Capability, Not Just a Badge

A lot of “AWD” badges on SUVs in this price range are mostly there for marketing. The Sierra EV’s Empowered A variant backs it up with six real terrain response modes, Normal, Grass/Snow, Mud-ruts/Gravel, Sand, Rock Crawl and Custom, plus 504 Nm of combined torque. Tata used it to set a dune-climbing record in the UAE before launch, which is a stunt, sure, but it’s a stunt that requires the hardware to actually work.

A Lifetime Battery Warranty That Removes a Genuine Ownership Worry

Both battery packs get a 15-year warranty from first registration. Battery replacement cost is one of the biggest anxieties holding back Indian EV adoption, and Tata addressing it head-on with a genuinely long warranty term is worth more in practice than most of the flashier tech features on the spec sheet.

Styling That Doesn’t Blend Into the Crowd

Open any list of electric SUVs currently on sale in India and you’ll notice most of them share a similar rounded, slightly futuristic silhouette. The Sierra EV’s boxy, upright stance with Alpine window styling is a deliberate callback to the 1992 original, and it genuinely stands out on the road. Whether you personally like the retro look is subjective, but “forgettable” isn’t a criticism anyone’s going to level at this design.

A Feature List That Punches Above Its Price Bracket

Ventilated front seats with memory function, a triple-screen dashboard, a head-up display, a 12-speaker JBL sound system, a segment-claimed largest panoramic sunroof, and EV-specific extras like V2L and V2V charging. This is a genuinely generous feature set for a car starting under Rs 19 lakh, and it holds up reasonably well even against pricier rivals.

Flexible Battery and Drivetrain Choice on Mid-Range Trims

Unlike some rivals that lock you into one battery size per trim, the Sierra EV’s Adventure and Empowered variants both let you choose between the 63 kWh and 75 kWh packs for a moderate premium. That flexibility means you’re not forced to overpay for range you don’t need, or underpay and regret the shorter range later.

Cons

AWD Is Locked Behind the Most Expensive Trim

Here’s the flip side of the AWD praise above: you can only get it on the Empowered A variant at Rs 25.99 lakh. There’s no mid-tier way to add all-wheel drive without also paying for the fully loaded top trim. If you want AWD purely for wet-weather confidence or occasional rough patches, and don’t care about the rest of the Empowered A’s feature list, you’re still paying full price for all of it anyway.

The Touch-Only Climate Control Panel Is a Real Annoyance

This sounds like a minor gripe until you’re actually driving and trying to adjust the AC temperature while stuck in traffic. The gloss-black, touch-sensitive climate panel looks sharp in showroom lighting but is genuinely harder to operate by feel than physical buttons or a rotary dial, and it shows fingerprints and scratches quickly. It’s a small thing that adds up over years of daily use.

No Independent Crash Test Rating at Launch

A formal Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP star rating hadn’t been published at the time of writing. Tata’s internal dual-truck crash testing gives the company confidence, but that’s not the same as a third-party-verified result, and for anyone spending Rs 20 lakh-plus specifically on the strength of safety credentials, that’s a genuine gap to be aware of, not a dismissible technicality.

Real-World Range Is Still Unproven

MIDC-claimed figures are a reasonable starting point, but they are, by definition, lab numbers. No owner has driven a Sierra EV through six months of Indian summer traffic yet, since deliveries only began mid-July 2026. Until that data exists, the 665 km figure should be treated as a ceiling to plan around, not a number you’ll see reflected on your own dashboard.

The AWD Variant’s Range Actually Drops Compared to RWD

This one catches buyers off guard: choosing AWD doesn’t just add performance, it also costs you range. The Empowered A AWD claims 624 km against the RWD 75 kWh’s 665 km, a 41 km drop for the same battery pack, purely due to the extra motor’s weight and drag. If range is your top priority, AWD is working against you, not for you.

Home Charger Isn’t Included in the Price

The 7.2 kW AC home charger is a separate Rs 49,000 purchase, not bundled into the ex-showroom price. It’s an easy line item to overlook when budgeting, and buyers who assume home charging comes standard, as it does with some rivals, may be caught slightly off guard.

It’s a Brand-New Nameplate With No Long-Term Reliability Track Record

The Sierra EV shares its underlying platform with the Harrier EV, which does give it some inherited maturity, but as a standalone model it’s genuinely new to Indian roads. Buyers who prioritise long-term reliability data and a proven ownership track record over cutting-edge specs may want to see how the first year of Sierra EV ownership plays out before committing.

Weighing It All Together

None of the cons here are dealbreakers on their own, and none of the pros are perfect either, that’s normal for any vehicle, EV or otherwise. What matters is which side of this list weighs more heavily for your specific situation. If boot space, range, and distinctive styling are what you’re shopping for, the pros list here does most of the heavy lifting toward a genuinely strong case. If you’re specifically hunting for a mid-priced AWD variant or need independently verified crash safety data before you sign, the cons list points toward waiting a few months rather than booking today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest drawback of the Tata Sierra EV?

The lack of an independent Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP crash-test rating at launch is the most significant gap for safety-conscious buyers, alongside the fact that all-wheel drive is only available on the most expensive Empowered A trim.

What is the best feature of the Tata Sierra EV?

Its combination of 622-litre boot space, a usable frunk, and a strong claimed range of up to 665 km makes it one of the most practical electric SUVs currently available in this price bracket.

Does choosing AWD reduce the Tata Sierra EV’s range?

Yes. The AWD Empowered A variant claims 624 km against the RWD 75 kWh variant’s 665 km, a genuine trade-off between performance and range.

Is the home charger included with the Tata Sierra EV purchase?

No. The 7.2 kW AC home charger is an optional accessory costing Rs 49,000, purchased separately from the vehicle.
