Toyota Hilux 2026 vs Isuzu D-Max: What to Expect

Toyota's ninth-generation Hilux arrives in India on July 28, right into a segment where Isuzu's updated D-Max V-Cross has already staked its claim. Here's how the two lifestyle pickups are expected to compare on design, power, cabin tech and price.

India’s lifestyle pickup segment is small, but it’s about to get more interesting. Toyota is set to launch the ninth-generation Hilux on July 28, 2026, arriving in a segment where Isuzu had already made its move earlier this year with an updated D-Max V-Cross. Neither truck sells in huge numbers, but both matter to a specific kind of buyer: someone who wants genuine off-road hardware without stepping into a commercial vehicle.

Pricing: A Meaningful Gap

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross was updated for 2026 back in February, with prices now running from ₹25.50 lakh to ₹30.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The current Toyota Hilux, ahead of its own update, sits between ₹28.52 lakh and ₹36 lakh (ex-showroom). Toyota hasn’t announced official pricing for the new-generation truck yet, but industry expectations point to a range of roughly ₹30 lakh to ₹38 lakh (ex-showroom) once it lands on July 28. Going purely by these numbers, the V-Cross is likely to undercut the new Hilux by ₹10-15 lakh at the entry point, which keeps it the more accessible way into the segment.

Powertrain: Displacement vs Efficiency

The D-Max V-Cross continues with its familiar 1.9-litre diesel engine, producing 163hp and 360Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. As part of the 2026 update, Isuzu also discontinued the 4×2 option entirely, so every V-Cross variant now comes with 4×4 and an auto-locking differential as standard.

Toyota’s Hilux is expected to stick with its larger 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, which gives it a clear displacement and, likely, a torque advantage over the Isuzu. Internationally, this engine is already offered with a 48V mild-hybrid system for better efficiency, and there’s a reasonable chance India gets that setup too, though Toyota hasn’t confirmed it for the local market. If the Hilux does get the bigger engine with hybrid assistance, it should have the edge in outright performance, while the V-Cross’s smaller engine and established reliability keep it the more fuel-conscious pick.

Cabin and Tech: Toyota’s Bigger Leap

Isuzu’s cabin update for the V-Cross is meaningful but incremental: a 10.3-inch floating touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, an 8-speaker sound system, and brown leatherette trim on the Z Prestige variant. It’s a clear step up from the outgoing cabin, though the underlying dashboard architecture is still based on an older platform.

Toyota appears to be going further. The new Hilux’s cabin takes design cues from the Land Cruiser, with dual 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, expected additions like ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, multiple terrain modes, and a 360-degree camera of its own. Both trucks retain physical buttons for climate and off-road controls, which matters more than it sounds for anyone actually using these vehicles off-road.

Where Each Truck Wins

The V-Cross’s case is straightforward: a significantly lower entry price, standard 4×4 across the range, and a tech update that’s genuinely useful without asking buyers to pay Hilux money. The new Hilux’s case rests on a bigger engine, a more thoroughly redesigned cabin, and a broader feature set, at a price that reflects that gap.

For a buyer who wants serious 4×4 capability and modern-enough tech without stretching the budget, the D-Max V-Cross remains the sensible choice. For a buyer who wants the most premium, most powerful lifestyle pickup available in India and doesn’t mind paying for it, the new Hilux looks like the one to wait for. [INSERT FINAL PRICE AND SPEC CONFIRMATION] after the July 28 launch will make this a more precise call.
