India’s midsize SUV segment runs almost entirely on petrol, diesel, and turbo-petrol power today. That’s about to change. Nissan, Kia, and Hyundai are each working on hybrid versions of their volume SUVs, and the timing isn’t a coincidence: CAFE-III emission norms kick in from 2027, pushing manufacturers to cut fleet-average emissions, and hybrids offer a way to do that without the charging-infrastructure problem that still holds back EV buyers outside major cities.
Nissan Tekton Hybrid
The Tekton is Nissan’s badge-engineered version of the new Renault Duster, and it’s expected to be the first of the three to reach Indian showrooms, likely by late 2026. It will share the Duster’s Hybrid E-Tech powertrain, built around a 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with a 1.4kWh battery pack. Unlike the Kia and Hyundai hybrids below, which are still in early development, the Tekton’s underlying hybrid system already exists in Renault’s global lineup, which gives it a real head start toward an actual India launch date.

Kia confirmed a strong hybrid powertrain was on the cards for the Indian market when it launched the second-generation Seltos in December 2025. The hybrid version is expected to use a locally manufactured 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the same unit already sold in the ICE Seltos, paired with an electric motor. A highly localised setup like this is typically Kia’s way of keeping costs in check, since imported hybrid components would push the Seltos well past its current price band. Current estimates put the launch sometime in 2027, though Kia hasn’t announced an official date.
Hyundai Creta Hybrid
The Creta is India’s best-selling midsize SUV, and Hyundai is reportedly bringing a hybrid variant with the next-generation model, internally codenamed SX3. It’s expected to share its hybrid setup with the Seltos hybrid above, since Hyundai and Kia commonly cross-develop powertrains for shared platforms. The existing petrol, turbo-petrol, and diesel options are expected to continue alongside the hybrid, not replace it. A launch is expected around 2027, tied to the next-gen Creta’s broader rollout.
Why this matters more than a routine model update
All three of these are speculative in timing, since none of the three companies has issued an official India launch date, and the specifications above come from powertrains already confirmed for other markets or platforms, not India-specific disclosures. What’s notable is the pattern: three of the segment’s biggest volume-sellers converging on hybrid power in roughly the same 12-18 month window suggests this isn’t one manufacturer testing the waters, it’s the segment itself shifting. For buyers currently cross-shopping a Creta, Seltos, or a Duster-based SUV, that means the “wait or buy now” calculus is about to get more complicated, particularly for anyone whose daily driving is heavy on city traffic, where a strong hybrid’s stop-start efficiency gains matter most.
None of these models has a confirmed price yet, and any figure floating around before an official announcement should be treated as an estimate, not a quote.
