India’s electric vehicle market extended its growth run in July 2026, with total EV registrations across all categories rising 63.18% year-on-year to 3,07,752 units, according to JMK Research & Analytics. On a sequential basis, the market grew a modest 0.72% from 3,05,566 units in June. Nuvama and EVreporter’s Vahan-based tracking put the overall total slightly higher, near 3.1-3.28 lakh units, with the variance reflecting differing data cut-off dates rather than a differing trend.
Electric two-wheelers remained the largest category by volume, holding a 61.37% share of total EV registrations, followed by electric passenger three-wheelers at 23.72%. Electric cars made up roughly 10% of the overall EV market by volume but posted the sharpest annual growth rate among the major categories.
Electric Cars: The Standout Segment
India registered 32,036 electric passenger vehicles in July 2026, per Vahan portal data downloaded as of August 3, up 82.9% YoY from 17,515 units in July 2025, though down 1.5% from June’s 32,509 units. JMK Research’s independent count showed a similar pattern: 30,806 units, up 81% YoY, down 2% MoM, with EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment at 7.92%.
Tata Motors led the segment with 13,630 units and a 42.5% market share, up from 38.4% a year earlier. Mahindra was second with 7,710 units, its market share climbing sharply from 19.5% to 24.1% on 125.7% YoY growth. MG held third place with 5,665 units, though its share nearly halved year-on-year, from 33.7% to 17.7%, as the wider market grew faster than MG’s own volumes. Maruti Suzuki and VinFast rounded out the top five, both without a comparable July 2025 base, signalling how quickly the competitive field has widened.

Three-Wheelers and Two-Wheelers Add Scale
Electric three-wheeler registrations rose 9% month-on-month to 84,554 units, up roughly 22% YoY, supported by improving financing availability and a lower total cost of ownership for commercial operators. EV penetration in the three-wheeler segment recovered to 65.55% in July. Two-wheelers continued to anchor the market’s overall volume, though category-specific YoY figures for July were not broken out in the available tracking reports.
A 10-Million-Vehicle Milestone
India’s cumulative EV registrations across all vehicle categories crossed 10 million for the first time, with Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari confirming 10,023,396 registered EVs as of July 26, 2026, in a written Lok Sabha reply, over 11 times the FY20 base. Public charging infrastructure has lagged the pace of vehicle growth: India had 52,718 public charging stations as of March 2026, with 4,874 additional chargers sanctioned in July under the PM E-DRIVE scheme at a cost of roughly ₹503.86 crore.
State-Wise Spread
Uttar Pradesh led state-wise EV registrations with 47,062 units in July, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. The top 10 states together accounted for 77% of the country’s total EV sales, per JMK Research, underlining how concentrated India’s EV adoption remains in a handful of large states even as the national growth rate accelerates.
