India’s electric vehicle charging network is expanding faster than ever before. New chargers are appearing in cities, on highways, and inside commercial spaces. On paper, this growth looks like a major win for EV adoption.

But for many EV owners, daily charging still feels uncertain.

The problem is not the number of chargers anymore. The real issue is how reliable and accessible those chargers are in real-world use.

Chargers Are Visible, But Not Always Usable

Most EV drivers rely on charging apps to locate nearby chargers. While these apps often show many available points, the ground reality can be different.

Common issues faced by EV users include:

  • Chargers that are offline or under maintenance
  • Charging spots blocked by parked vehicles
  • Limited access hours despite being marked “public”
  • Slow chargers occupying high-demand locations

For drivers who do not have home charging, these problems create daily stress.

Fast Charging Is Growing, But Unevenly

Fast chargers are increasing, especially along major highways and metro routes. Intercity EV travel is now possible on some popular corridors.

However, coverage is still uneven.

Metro cities and premium highways have seen faster expansion, while tier-2 cities and interior highways remain underserved. This uneven rollout explains why EV confidence varies widely across regions.

Home Charging Still Does Most of the Work

Despite the growth of public chargers, home charging remains the backbone of EV ownership in India.

Most EV owners depend on:

  • Overnight AC charging
  • Fixed daily travel patterns
  • Personal parking access

Public charging currently acts as support, not a full replacement for home charging.

Until public chargers become as dependable as fuel stations, this situation is unlikely to change.

What Needs to Improve Next

For India’s EV charging network to truly support mass adoption, the focus must move beyond just adding more chargers.

Key areas that need improvement include:

  • Better maintenance and uptime
  • Accurate real-time status updates
  • Clear access and usage rules
  • Faster fault resolution

Trust matters more than numbers.

The Bigger Picture

India’s EV charging network is clearly moving in the right direction. However, the next phase must focus on reliability, consistency, and user experience.

As EV adoption moves beyond early adopters, dependable charging infrastructure will decide how confident buyers feel about making the switch from petrol and diesel.
