The Delhi Government is planning a major push for electric mobility with a proposal to offer 100 percent road tax exemption on electric cars. This move is part of the upcoming EV Policy 2026–2030, aimed at accelerating the adoption of cleaner vehicles in the capital.

Under the proposed policy, electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom) are expected to qualify for full exemption from road tax and registration charges. The idea is to make electric vehicles more affordable and attractive compared to petrol and diesel cars.

This initiative comes as Delhi continues to deal with high levels of air pollution, with vehicular emissions being a major contributor. By encouraging the shift to electric mobility, the government aims to reduce pollution and improve air quality over the long term.

One of the biggest advantages of this exemption is the reduction in upfront cost for buyers. Road tax can significantly increase the overall price of a car, and removing it makes electric vehicles more accessible, especially in the mass-market segment.

The policy is expected to remain in effect until 2030, providing long-term clarity and incentives for buyers. This extended timeline could help build consumer confidence and encourage more people to consider switching to electric vehicles.

However, the benefits are likely to be limited to affordable electric cars. Vehicles priced above ₹30 lakh may not qualify for the exemption, ensuring that the policy primarily supports wider adoption rather than premium segments.

In addition to tax benefits, the EV policy is expected to include measures such as expanding charging infrastructure, promoting battery swapping, and supporting different categories of electric vehicles. These steps are essential to create a strong ecosystem for EV adoption.

The government is also considering stricter measures to promote electrification in the coming years, which could include reducing the use of conventional fuel vehicles in certain segments.

This proposal reflects a larger shift toward sustainable mobility in India. With rising environmental concerns and increasing awareness among consumers, policies like these are playing a key role in accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.

If implemented, the 100 percent road tax exemption could significantly boost EV adoption in Delhi. It is expected to encourage buyers, support manufacturers, and strengthen the city’s position as a leading hub for electric mobility in India.
