July 2026 opened FY27’s second quarter the way most of the industry hoped it would. By Saturday afternoon, five of India’s biggest passenger vehicle makers, Hyundai, Kia, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Nissan, had already declared their numbers, and four of them posted their best-ever July. Hyundai didn’t just have a good July, it had its best month of any kind since the company entered India. Tata Motors grew nearly 60% year-on-year. Mahindra kept its SUV business above the 60,000-unit mark for a second straight month.
The one number that isn’t here yet is the one everyone asks for first: Maruti Suzuki’s. India’s largest carmaker, along with Toyota, Honda Cars, Skoda, Volkswagen, MG Motor and Renault, hadn’t published July figures at the time of writing. Neither had SIAM’s industry-wide wholesale total or FADA’s retail registration data, which typically follows a week to ten days into the new month. This report will be updated as those land.

Hyundai’s Best-Ever Month, Not Just Best July
Hyundai Motor India didn’t merely have a strong July, it recorded its highest-ever monthly sales since the company set up shop in India, at 75,360 units, up 25.4% year-on-year. Domestic sales rose 23.3% to 54,210 units, itself the brand’s best-ever July in the home market. What stands out just as much is the export side: 21,150 units shipped out, up 31.4%, marking Hyundai’s strongest monthly export performance in more than 100 months.
HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg tied the number directly to consumer trust in the brand rather than a one-off spike, calling it validation of “the immense trust consumers place in brand Hyundai.” Whether that momentum holds through August, when the festive lead-up typically starts influencing buyer behaviour, is the number to watch next.

Tata Motors: A 59% Jump, Powered by EVs
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles posted total sales of 63,760 units across domestic and international markets, up 59% from 40,175 units in July 2025. Domestic passenger vehicle sales alone rose 58% to 62,611 units, while the smaller international business grew 76% to 1,149 units.
The real story inside Tata’s number is the EV business. Sales of Tata’s electric models, including those from its Tata Passenger Electric Mobility subsidiary, more than doubled year-on-year to 15,217 units from 7,124 units, a 114% increase. That’s roughly a quarter of Tata’s entire domestic PV volume coming from electric models in a single month, which says something about how far EV adoption has moved from being a side conversation to a core part of Tata’s monthly number.
Maruti Suzuki Crosses 2 Lakh Units for the First Time
Maruti Suzuki India crossed a threshold it had never hit before in July 2026: domestic monthly sales above 2 lakh units. The country’s largest carmaker sold 2,00,123 units in the domestic market, its highest-ever monthly domestic tally, up 42.4% from 1,40,570 units in July 2025. Including sales to other OEMs and exports, total sales for the month came in at 2,41,421 units, up roughly 34% year-on-year. The compact and mid-size segment, led by the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, WagonR, Ignis, Celerio and Ciaz, carried most of that volume at 90,822 units, up 38% YoY. Not every line moved in the same direction, though: exports slipped 5.3% year-on-year to 30,056 units, and fell nearly 30% month-on-month from June’s 42,768 units, the one soft spot in an otherwise record month. On a sequential basis, domestic sales jumped roughly 33% from June’s 1,50,150 units, an unusually large month-on-month move that lines up with similarly strong MoM and YoY jumps already seen from Hyundai and Tata Motors this cycle, suggesting a shared industry-wide tailwind in July rather than something specific to Maruti Suzuki alone.
Mahindra Holds SUV Momentum Above 60,000 Units
Mahindra’s overall auto sales, including exports and its non-PV businesses, rose 26% year-on-year to 1,03,860 units. The number that matters most for the passenger vehicle story is domestic SUV sales: 60,048 units, up 20% year-on-year, and effectively flat against June’s 60,393 units, a dip of just 345 units month-on-month. Including exports, Mahindra’s total UV volume for the month stood at 60,887 units.
Mahindra CEO of the Automotive Division, Nalinikanth Gollagunta, framed the month as broad-based rather than SUV-only, pointing to growth across commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and exports too. Domestic CV sales grew 23% to 25,204 units, and three-wheeler sales, including electric models, jumped 53% to 14,538 units. Between April and July, Mahindra’s cumulative PV sales stand at 2,34,793 units against 2,01,938 units in the same period last year, a 16% year-on-year gain for the financial year so far.
Kia’s Best July Yet
Kia India logged its best-ever July with wholesale dispatches of 28,200 units, up 27.4% year-on-year. On a cumulative basis, Kia has dispatched 1,91,949 units between January and July 2026, up 16.8% over the same period last year, its strongest seven-month stretch to date. Kia hasn’t broken out a domestic-versus-export split for July yet; we’ll add that once it’s available.
Nissan’s Record Month, Driven by the New Tekton
Nissan Motor India posted a record monthly wholesale performance, with total dispatches of 9,339 units. Domestic wholesales more than tripled year-on-year, up 218% to 4,518 units, while exports came in at 4,821 units. Nissan credited the jump to customer deliveries beginning on its new Tekton SUV during the month, which now sits alongside the Magnite and the Gravite in the brand’s expanded SUV lineup. It’s a small base compared to the industry’s top five, but a 218% domestic jump off a genuine new-model launch is worth tracking into August to see if it holds once the initial delivery backlog clears.
What This Month Is Telling Us So Far
A few threads are visible even before the rest of the industry reports in:
SUVs remain the growth engine. Mahindra’s SUV-led volumes, Nissan’s Tekton-driven jump, and the general shape of what’s being reported all point the same direction. Once Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza-led and Toyota’s numbers land, expect this to firm up further.
EV growth is outpacing overall PV growth at Tata. A 114% year-on-year jump in EV sales against 58% growth in overall domestic PV sales means Tata’s EV share of its own portfolio is rising month over month, not just in absolute units.
Export momentum is unusually strong across multiple OEMs. Hyundai’s best export month in over 100 months and Nissan’s 4,821-unit export tally both point to overseas demand doing real work this month, not just domestic festive-season anticipation.
The market leader’s number is the one that will reset the picture. Maruti Suzuki alone typically accounts for close to 40% of India’s PV wholesale volume. Until its July figure is out, any read on total industry growth, market share shifts, or the wholesale-versus-retail gap stays incomplete.
What’s Still Missing (and When We’ll Add It)
- Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Honda Cars India, Skoda Auto/Volkswagen India, MG Motor India, Renault India July figures not yet out.
- SIAM industry-wide wholesale total pending. This is what will let us calculate real market share for each OEM above, rather than standalone growth rates.
- FADA retail registration data typically follows 7 to 10 days after the month closes. Needed for the Wholesale vs Retail Analysis and to know whether July’s strong dispatch numbers are matched by equally strong showroom registrations, or whether dealer inventory is building up.
