Vietnam-based electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has officially confirmed that it will introduce India-specific electric scooters in the second half of 2026. The announcement was made in January 2026 and marks the company’s formal entry into India’s electric two-wheeler segment, expanding its presence beyond passenger electric vehicles.

India is the world’s largest two-wheeler market, and electric scooters are emerging as the fastest-growing category within personal mobility. VinFast has clarified that its upcoming scooters will be purpose-built for India rather than adapted global products.

The confirmation sets the foundation for VinFast’s next phase in India, positioning the brand to compete in a highly volume-driven and price-sensitive segment dominated by domestic manufacturers.

India-specific electric scooter strategy

VinFast has stated that its electric scooters for India will be designed specifically around local riding conditions, traffic density, and daily commuter usage. The company has emphasised that these products will not be rebadged international models.

Key focus areas for India-specific development include:

  • Suitability for congested urban traffic
  • Durability for varied road conditions
  • Practical range and performance for daily commuting

By focusing on local requirements from the development stage itself, VinFast aims to create products that align more closely with Indian consumer expectations rather than relying on global design templates.

Manufacturing plans and capacity outlook

The company plans to base its electric two-wheeler operations at its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. A dedicated production line for electric scooters is being developed at the site, separate from passenger EV manufacturing operations.

VinFast has also outlined a long-term vision of scaling two-wheeler production significantly in India. The company is targeting a future manufacturing capacity of up to one million electric two-wheelers.

This capacity target represents a long-term ambition rather than immediate output, but it signals VinFast’s intention to compete at scale in India’s mass-market electric mobility segment rather than operate as a niche manufacturer.

Market context and localisation approach

India’s electric scooter market is currently led by domestic manufacturers with strong dealer networks, established supply chains, and cost-focused strategies. New global entrants face challenges related to pricing, service reach, and localisation.

VinFast has indicated that it is working toward increasing localisation levels through partnerships with Indian suppliers. This includes efforts to localise key components such as battery systems over time.

With the H2 2026 launch timeline now confirmed, VinFast’s India-specific electric scooters will serve as a critical test of how effectively a global EV manufacturer can adapt to India’s high-volume, competitive two-wheeler market.
