Toyota has launched the ninth-generation Hilux in India, with prices starting at ₹31.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and going up to ₹36.69 lakh for the top-spec variant. The pickup goes on sale roughly four years after the outgoing model’s India debut, and brings the biggest set of changes the Hilux has seen locally since launch.

Variants and Pricing

The new Hilux is offered in three variants. The base GX 4×2 AT starts the range at ₹31.99 lakh, the GX 4×4 AT is priced at ₹33.69 lakh, and the range-topping VX 4×4 AT comes in at ₹36.69 lakh (all ex-showroom). Unlike the outgoing model, Toyota is offering only a 6-speed torque-converter automatic across the range, with no manual gearbox option reported at launch.

Engine and Drivetrain

Power comes from the familiar 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, producing 204hp and 500Nm, now paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system for the first time in India. The base GX is available with a 4×2 layout, while the GX 4×4 and VX 4×4 variants get a proper 4×4 system with a low-range transfer case. Off-road electronics include Multi-Terrain Select and Downhill Assist Control, aimed at keeping the truck’s off-road credentials intact despite the added road-focused tech.

Cabin and Features

The interior sees the biggest change on the new Hilux. The outgoing model’s 7.8-inch touchscreen is replaced by two 12.3-inch displays, one for infotainment and one for the driver’s instrument cluster. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other additions include ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and wireless phone charging, features that were missing on the previous-generation truck and had been a recurring point of criticism against it.

Safety

The new Hilux carries a 5-star ANCAP safety rating from its global testing. Standard safety kit includes six airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and downhill assist control. Some reports indicate an ADAS suite, with features like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring, is offered on higher variants, though this hasn’t been confirmed across all sources and is worth verifying against Toyota’s official specification sheet.

Why It Matters

The Hilux has always sold in India on the strength of its off-road reputation rather than cabin comfort or feature count, and that gap has been the model’s most consistent weak point against rival SUVs at a similar price. With a fully redesigned interior, a mild-hybrid powertrain, and a starting price close to earlier estimates, Toyota appears to be closing that gap directly, putting the new Hilux in more active contention with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross and premium lifestyle SUVs in the same price band.
