In a major step towards improving road safety and maintenance, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to deploy an AI-powered dashcam network across the country’s highways. The initiative aims to monitor road conditions in real time and fix issues faster, reducing the risks faced by daily commuters.

AI Technology to Monitor 40,000 KM of Highways

As part of this plan, NHAI will introduce advanced dashcam-based monitoring systems across nearly 40,000 km of national highways. These dashcams will be installed on patrol vehicles that regularly travel on highways, capturing continuous video footage of road conditions. The collected data will then be analysed using artificial intelligence, allowing authorities to detect problems without relying only on manual inspections.

Capable of Detecting Multiple Road Issues

The AI system is designed to identify more than 30 different types of road-related problems. This includes potholes, cracks, damaged road markings, broken barriers, poor lighting, waterlogging, and even roadside encroachments. By automating this process, the system can quickly flag issues that need attention, making maintenance more efficient and timely.

Real-Time Data for Faster Action

One of the biggest advantages of this system is its ability to provide real-time insights. Authorities will be able to track road conditions as they change and ensure that necessary repairs are carried out quickly. The system will also allow officials to monitor the status of ongoing maintenance work, improving accountability and overall efficiency.

Regular Monitoring and Night Checks

To ensure accuracy, NHAI plans to conduct regular highway surveys using these dashcam-equipped vehicles. In addition to daytime monitoring, night inspections will also be carried out to assess lighting conditions and visibility on highways. This is expected to improve safety, especially for long-distance drivers who travel during night hours.

Improving Safety and Driving Experience

The move comes as part of NHAI’s broader effort to enhance highway safety and user experience. Poor road conditions have been a major concern for drivers, often leading to accidents and vehicle damage.

With AI-based monitoring, issues can be identified early and addressed quickly, leading to smoother and safer journeys for commuters.

A Step Towards Smarter Infrastructure

This initiative reflects a shift towards data-driven infrastructure management in India. By using AI and digital tools, NHAI aims to make highway maintenance more proactive rather than reactive.

It also signals the growing role of technology in improving public infrastructure and ensuring better service for road users.
