India’s electric vehicle charging network is expanding faster than ever. New public chargers are appearing in cities, along highways, and inside malls. On paper, this growth looks impressive.Yet for many EV owners, charging anxiety hasn’t disappeared.

The real issue is not the number of chargers, but how reliable and accessible they are in daily use.

Chargers Exist, But Access Is Still Uneven

Most charging apps show plenty of charging points, especially in metro cities. However, EV owners often face problems like chargers being offline, blocked by parked cars, or working only during limited hours.A listed charger does not always mean a usable charger.

This gap between availability and accessibility is what continues to worry EV drivers, especially those who rely on public charging instead of home charging.

Fast Charging Is Improving, Slowly but Surely

Fast chargers are increasing on major highways and high-traffic routes. Some city-to-city EV travel is now possible with proper planning. But the improvement is uneven.

Metro cities and premium highways are far ahead, while tier-2 cities and interior highways still have limited fast-charging options. For many users, this makes long trips stressful.

Home Charging Is Still the Backbone

Despite the growing public network, most EV owners still depend on home charging. Overnight charging remains the most reliable and affordable option. Public charging mainly acts as backup support, not the primary solution, especially for daily commuting.

Until public chargers become as dependable as fuel stations, this pattern is unlikely to change.

What Needs to Improve Next

For India’s EV charging network to truly support mass adoption, the focus must move beyond adding numbers.

Key improvements needed:

  • Better charger maintenance
  • Real-time working status updates
  • Clear access rules
  • Faster fault resolution

Trust matters more than count.

The Bigger Picture

India’s EV charging network is moving in the right direction, but progress must now focus on quality, reliability, and user experience.

As more first-time EV buyers enter the market, dependable charging will decide how confident people feel about switching from petrol and diesel.
