Chinese automaker Geely on January 27, 2026, launched the EX2 electric compact SUV in Indonesia, marking a key step in its Southeast Asia expansion strategy and reinforcing its push into the fast-growing affordable electric vehicle segment. The launch is significant as Southeast Asian markets are emerging as major growth regions for entry-level EV adoption, driven by government incentives, urban mobility needs, and rising fuel costs.

The Geely EX2 is positioned as an affordable, city-focused electric SUV aimed at first-time EV buyers and urban commuters. With compact dimensions, modern design, and competitive pricing, the model targets high-volume markets such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, where demand for budget-friendly electric cars is accelerating rapidly.

The EX2 becomes Geely’s latest addition to its international electric portfolio, supporting the company’s strategy to expand beyond China and build volume in emerging EV markets.

Design and Cabin Layout Focused on Urban Buyers

The Geely EX2 adopts a modern and youth-oriented exterior design, featuring a closed front grille, slim LED headlamps, sculpted bumpers, and compact body proportions optimised for urban environments. The SUV-like stance and raised ground clearance provide practicality for city roads while maintaining easy manoeuvrability.

At the rear, the EX2 features sleek LED tail lamps and a clean tailgate design, contributing to its contemporary styling. The compact footprint allows easy parking and agile city driving, making it suitable for dense urban centres.

Inside, the EX2 offers a minimalist cabin layout focused on functionality and technology. It features a touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel, wireless smartphone connectivity, and smart storage solutions. The cabin design prioritises space efficiency, ensuring practical seating comfort for five occupants within its compact footprint.

Battery, Motor and Driving Range

The Geely EX2 is powered by a single electric motor paired with a lithium-ion battery pack, delivering smooth and efficient urban performance. The model is expected to offer battery options in the range of 30 kWh to 40 kWh, enabling a certified driving range of approximately 300 to 400 kilometres on international test cycles.

Fast-charging capability allows quicker top-ups, making the EX2 suitable for daily commuting and short intercity travel. The powertrain setup is designed to balance cost, efficiency, and real-world usability, aligning with the expectations of budget-focused EV buyers.

The electric drivetrain also ensures zero tailpipe emissions, supporting Indonesia’s broader national goals of reducing urban pollution and cutting fossil fuel dependence.

Safety and Technology Features

Safety remains a key focus for the Geely EX2, with features including multiple airbags, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Higher variants are expected to offer advanced driver assistance features, depending on market regulations and consumer demand.

The EX2 also incorporates connected car technologies, over-the-air update capability, and mobile app integration, enhancing ownership convenience and digital connectivity.

Market Positioning and Strategic Importance

In Indonesia, the Geely EX2 is positioned as a competitively priced electric SUV aimed at mass-market adoption. It directly competes with affordable electric offerings from brands such as Wuling, BYD, and Chery, all of which are rapidly expanding their EV portfolios in the region.

The Indonesian EV market is witnessing strong growth due to favourable government policies, local manufacturing incentives, and improving charging infrastructure. Models like the EX2 play a critical role in accelerating EV penetration by offering practical electric mobility at accessible price points.

For Geely, the EX2 strengthens its footprint in Southeast Asia and supports its long-term global electrification strategy by building volumes in emerging markets.

India Relevance and Market Outlook

While Geely does not currently operate in India’s passenger vehicle market, the EX2’s compact size, urban-focused design, and affordable positioning align closely with Indian EV demand patterns. Entry-level electric SUVs are among the fastest-growing segments in India, driven by rising fuel prices and improving charging networks.

If introduced, the EX2 would compete with models such as Tata Punch EV, Tata Tiago EV, Citroën eC3, and MG Comet EV. Its launch in Indonesia highlights the growing importance of affordable electric vehicles in developing markets, a trend that is also shaping India’s EV landscape.
