Maruti Brezza 2026 Transmission Options: 6MT vs 6AT Explained

The 2026 Brezza facelift moved every engine to a 6-speed manual and kept its 6-speed torque converter automatic. Here's what that means for you.

If you’ve been reading up on the Brezza facelift before it launched, you may have seen mentions of a 5-speed manual gearbox carrying over. That’s no longer accurate. When Maruti Suzuki actually launched the 2026 Brezza on July 24, the 5-speed manual was gone from the lineup entirely, replaced by a 6-speed manual across every engine option, alongside the familiar 6-speed torque converter automatic on the 1.5-litre petrol. There’s no CVT, no AMT, and no dual-clutch box here. Just two gearbox types spread across three powertrains.

This piece breaks down exactly which transmission comes with which engine and variant, and what the difference actually feels like from the driver’s seat.

What Actually Changed in the Facelift

The outgoing Brezza paired its 1.5-litre K15C petrol with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, and the CNG version stuck with a 5-speed manual too. For 2026, Maruti quietly upgraded both the petrol and CNG manual gearboxes to 6-speed units. The extra ratio isn’t about outright performance. It’s mainly there to drop cruising RPM on the highway and claw back a bit of fuel efficiency, something that matters a lot to a buyer doing daily Mumbai-Pune or Bengaluru-Mysuru runs.

The bigger news is the new 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol, borrowed from the Fronx, which arrives exclusively with a 6-speed manual. There’s no automatic option on the turbo engine at launch, which is worth knowing upfront if you were hoping to combine turbo response with a torque converter box.

6-Speed Manual: Where You’ll Find It

The 6MT is the volume gearbox in this lineup, and it’s offered with all three engines:

  • 1.5-litre K15C petrol available across LXi, VXi and ZXi trims, producing around 103 PS and 139 Nm
  • 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol available across all four trims (LXi, VXi, ZXi, ZXi+), the only transmission choice for this engine, producing 110 PS and 170 Nm
  • 1.5-litre CNG (bi-fuel) available on LXi, VXi and ZXi, now paired with the new underbody CNG tank that frees up genuine boot space compared to the old setup

Shift quality on the petrol and turbo units feels notably tighter than the outgoing 5-speed, with shorter throws between gears. On the turbo specifically, the extra ratio actually earns its keep. With 170 Nm on tap from low in the rev range, the taller sixth gear means you’re not constantly hunting for the next gear on the highway the way you might in a smaller-displacement turbo car with fewer ratios to spread the power across.

6-Speed Automatic: The Torque Converter, Not a CVT

The automatic option remains a conventional 6-speed torque converter unit, offered only with the 1.5-litre NA petrol, and only from the VXi trim upward. The base LXi doesn’t get an automatic at all, petrol or otherwise.

This is a deliberate, proven choice by Maruti rather than a cost-cutting one. Torque converters handle stop-start city traffic more smoothly than a CVT tends to, without the rubber-band throttle feel some buyers dislike, and they’ve historically proven durable over high-mileage ownership in the Indian market. The trade-off is that a torque converter box is usually a notch behind a CVT on outright fuel efficiency, and behind a DCT on outright shift speed. For a compact SUV built primarily for city and highway commuting rather than spirited driving, this is a reasonable trade to make.

1.5L CNG (bi-fuel)88 PS / 121.5 Nm6-speed manualLXi, VXi, ZXi

Which One Should You Actually Pick?

If you’re commuting through heavy city traffic daily and your left leg dreads clutch work, the 6-speed automatic on the 1.5-litre petrol is the easier ownership experience, and you’ll need to step up to at least the VXi trim to get it.

If you want the strongest low-end shove in the lineup and don’t mind shifting gears yourself, the 1.0-litre turbo with the 6MT is the more engaging option. Just budget for the fact that it’s not available as an automatic, so if you later decide you want a torque converter box, you’d be looking at a different engine, not a different gearbox on the same one.

If running cost is the priority over performance, the CNG variant with its new 6-speed manual and underbody tank is worth cross-shopping. Just remember it tops out at the ZXi trim; the range-topping ZXi+ isn’t offered with factory CNG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 2026 Brezza still get a 5-speed manual?

No. The 5-speed manual has been dropped entirely in this facelift. Every manual variant, petrol, turbo or CNG, now comes with a 6-speed gearbox.

Is the Brezza’s automatic a CVT or a torque converter?

It’s a conventional 6-speed torque converter automatic, the same type of gearbox Maruti has used on the Brezza since the 2022 model, not a CVT.

Can you get the turbo-petrol Brezza with an automatic gearbox?

Not at launch. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo is offered exclusively with the 6-speed manual across all four trims.

Which Brezza trims offer an automatic gearbox?

The 6-speed automatic is available from VXi upward on the 1.5-litre NA petrol engine. It isn’t offered on the base LXi.
