Mercedes-Benz plans to position the VLE as a flexible vehicle that can serve multiple purposes, including family travel, leisure activities and high-end VIP shuttle services. With seating for up to eight passengers and a fully electric powertrain, the VLE aims to redefine the future of luxury passenger vans. The model also introduces a new generation of Mercedes-Benz electric vans and will sit below a more luxurious version called the VLS.

Built on the New VAN.EA Electric Platform

One of the most important highlights of the Mercedes-Benz VLE is its new electric vehicle architecture. The van is the first production model built on the Van Electric Architecture platform.

This modular and scalable platform has been developed specifically for electric vans and MPVs. It allows Mercedes-Benz to build multiple vehicle sizes and configurations while maintaining efficient electric performance.

The VAN.EA platform will also underpin future electric passenger vans from the brand, including the upcoming VLS model. Meanwhile, combustion-engine vans in the future will use a separate platform known as VAN.CA, allowing Mercedes to develop electric and traditional vehicles independently. This strategy forms an important part of the company’s broader shift toward electric mobility, modular EV platforms and next-generation luxury MPVs.

Battery, Range and Fast-Charging Capability

The Mercedes-Benz VLE electric van focuses heavily on long-distance usability, which is important for family travel and commercial passenger transport.

The first version of the VLE uses a 115kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack combined with an 800-volt electrical system. This advanced setup enables the van to deliver a driving range of more than 700 kilometres on the WLTP testing cycle.

Fast charging is another major advantage of the VLE. The vehicle can gain around 320 kilometres of additional driving range in just 15 minutes when connected to a high-speed charging station.

Mercedes-Benz also plans to introduce a smaller 80kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery option in the future to provide a more affordable version of the vehicle. These features make the VLE suitable for long road trips, daily commuting and premium transportation services.

Performance and Powertrain Options

The Mercedes-Benz VLE will be available with multiple electric powertrain options.

The entry-level variant, called the VLE 300, produces about 276 horsepower and focuses on balanced performance and efficiency.

For customers seeking higher performance, Mercedes will offer the VLE 400, which delivers around 415 horsepower and comes with an all-wheel-drive system. This version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds, impressive for a vehicle of this size.

The van also features rear-axle steering with up to seven degrees of movement, helping it achieve a tight turning circle of about 10.9 metres. Air suspension is available to improve ride comfort and handling. These technologies enhance both driving stability and maneuverability, especially in urban environments.

Aerodynamic Design and Exterior Styling

The Mercedes-Benz VLE features a sleek and aerodynamic design aimed at improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

The van achieves a drag coefficient of 0.25Cd, which is very low for a vehicle of this size.

Key exterior highlights include:

  • Star-shaped LED daytime running lights
  • A full-width LED light strip connecting the headlights
  • Optional illuminated front grille
  • Electric sliding doors on both sides
  • Wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 22 inches

At the rear, the VLE features a full-width light bar forming an inverted U-shaped design across the tailgate. The van also retains practical features such as a separately opening rear window for easier cargo access. The design combines modern styling with functional elements suited for a large luxury MPV.

Flexible Interior and Passenger Comfort

Inside the cabin, the VLE focuses on versatility and comfort. Depending on the seating configuration, the vehicle can accommodate between five and eight passengers.

The seating layout is highly flexible. Rear seats can be completely removed, allowing the cargo space to expand to 4,078 litres when needed.

Mercedes-Benz will offer three different seat types:

  • Comfort Seat with manual adjustment
  • Premium Comfort Seat with electric adjustment
  • Grand Comfort Seat with additional luxury features

The Grand Comfort seats include features such as massage functions, lumbar support, pillows, wireless charging and folding tables for added convenience. This flexible seating arrangement allows the VLE to function as a family vehicle, executive shuttle or luxury travel van.

Advanced Digital Technology and Entertainment

The VLE’s cabin also features a range of advanced digital technologies.

One of the most striking elements is the 31.3-inch retractable 8K display designed for rear passengers. The screen folds into the roof when not in use and provides high-resolution entertainment during long journeys. The dashboard uses Mercedes-Benz’s Superscreen layout, which includes:

  • A 10.25-inch digital driver display
  • A 14-inch central infotainment touchscreen
  • A 14-inch passenger display

The system also supports over-the-air software updates, allowing the vehicle’s features to be updated remotely.

Additional technology features include:

  • 22-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Wireless charging for devices
  • Smartphone-controlled seat adjustments
  • Climate-controlled storage compartments

These features turn the VLE into a mobile lounge-like space for passengers.

Advanced Safety and Driver Assistance

Mercedes-Benz has also equipped the VLE with a comprehensive safety and driver assistance system.

The vehicle uses multiple sensors, including:

  • 10 cameras
  • 5 radar sensors
  • 12 ultrasonic sensors

These sensors support advanced driver assistance functions such as collision prevention, automated parking and adaptive driving support. Such technologies help improve safety and make driving a large MPV easier.

Future Role in Mercedes-Benz Lineup

The VLE is expected to replace and expand the role previously played by models like the V-Class in the brand’s passenger van lineup.

Mercedes-Benz plans to position the VLE as a versatile electric MPV, while the upcoming VLS will focus more on ultra-luxury chauffeur-driven travel. Production of the VLE is expected to begin in 2026, marking the start of a new era for Mercedes-Benz electric vans.
