Home Charger Installation Guide for Tata Sierra EV

A practical walkthrough of getting a home charger installed for your Tata Sierra EV, from sanctioned load checks to the actual installation day.

Most Sierra EV owners will do 80-90% of their charging at home, not at a public DC station, which makes the home charger setup one of the first things to sort out after booking the car, not something to figure out after delivery. Here’s what actually happens between placing your order and having a working wall box in your parking spot.

What Charger Options Come With the Sierra EV

The Sierra EV supports three charging paths: a 3.3kW portable charger that works off a standard socket, a 7.2kW AC wall box for faster home charging, and DC fast charging up to 120kW at public stations. For home use, the choice really comes down to the portable unit versus the wall box.

The bundled 3.3kW portable charger is meant for occasional or backup use, not daily reliance. Plugged into a regular socket, it’ll fully charge the 63 kWh pack in roughly 10.5 hours and the 75 kWh pack in a bit longer, which works fine if you charge overnight and don’t drive huge distances daily. But it does warm up the socket over long sessions, and it’s not something to lean on as your only charging method for years.

The 7.2kW wall box is the setup most owners actually want. It roughly doubles the charging speed of the portable unit and is built for daily, sustained use rather than occasional top-ups. Both the wall box and the portable charger carry a 3-year warranty from the date of commissioning at your location.

Check Your Sanctioned Load First

Before anything else, find out your home’s sanctioned electrical load. This is the number that determines whether your existing connection can handle a 7.2kW charger running for hours at a stretch, and it’s the single most common reason installations get delayed or need modification.

To pull 7.2kW at full capacity, you need one of two things: a fully dedicated single-phase connection used only for EV charging, or enough spare sanctioned load on your existing connection to handle the charger alongside everything else running in the house. If your current load is too tight, you’ll need to apply to your electricity board for an increase before installation can proceed, and that process alone can take a few weeks depending on your local DISCOM.

This is worth checking the moment you book the car, not after it’s delivered. A sanctioned load upgrade is not something that happens overnight, and there’s nothing worse than a new EV sitting on a portable charger for a month because nobody checked the load in advance.

Why This Isn’t a DIY Job

It’s tempting to hand this over to your building’s regular electrician, but EV charger installation genuinely needs more than general wiring knowledge. It involves correctly sizing the feeder cable for continuous 7.2kW draw, selecting the right MCB rating, proper conduiting from the meter to the charging point, and confirming earthing is up to standard, since a poorly earthed installation is a real safety risk with a load this size running for hours every day.

Tata’s official guidance here is direct: installation should go through their authorized installation partner rather than a building electrician, and buying the charger with the free installation service through your nearest Tata Motors dealership is the recommended path. This isn’t just a manufacturer preference to sell more service, it’s genuinely the safer route given how much can go wrong with an undersized cable or a poorly rated breaker running hot day after day.

The Installation Process, Step by Step

1. Book the charger through your dealership: This is usually done alongside your car booking or shortly after, so the installation survey can happen before delivery.

2. Site survey: A technician visits your home to check the distance from your meter to the parking spot, your sanctioned load, existing wiring condition, and where the wall box will physically sit.

3. Load and wiring assessment: If your sanctioned load is insufficient, this is flagged here, and the technician will guide you through applying for an increase with your DISCOM.

4. Installation: Once wiring and load are confirmed adequate, the actual installation, running the dedicated cable, fitting the MCB, mounting the wall box, and connecting to a dedicated point, typically takes a few hours.

5. Testing and handover: The technician tests the charger with your car connected before signing off, and this is when the 3-year warranty clock starts.

Apartment Owners Have an Extra Step

If you live in a society rather than an independent house, you’ll need your Resident Welfare Association’s approval before installation, since it usually involves running a dedicated line through common areas and sometimes tapping into the building’s electrical infrastructure rather than just your own flat’s connection. Get this sign-off early. Societies that haven’t dealt with EV charger requests before can take a while to approve one, and it’s a genuinely different process from a standalone house where you control the entire installation.

For societies with several EV owners, a single community charger is often a more practical route than one wall box per car. One charger of this kind typically serves 3-4 vehicles, with additional units added as demand grows, and it avoids overloading a building’s overall sanctioned capacity with multiple individual dedicated connections.

What It Costs

Installation cost depends heavily on the distance between your meter and parking spot, whether your building needs cable runs through shared areas, and whether a sanctioned load upgrade is required. A straightforward independent-house installation with adequate existing load will cost noticeably less than an apartment setup requiring a long cable run and society coordination. Ask your dealership for an itemised quote covering the wall box, cabling, MCB, and labour separately, rather than one bundled figure, so you know exactly what you’re paying for if your specific site needs extra work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a regular home electrician to install the Sierra EV’s charger?

Tata recommends against it. The company advises using its authorized installation partner because correctly sizing the feeder cable, MCB, and earthing for a sustained 7.2kW load needs specific EV-charging expertise that a general building electrician typically doesn’t have.

How long does the Sierra EV take to charge on a home wall box?

On the 7.2kW AC wall box, expect roughly 8.9 hours for the 63 kWh pack and around 10.5 hours for the 75 kWh pack, going from a low charge to full, making overnight charging the practical routine for most owners.

Do I need my society’s permission to install a home charger?

Yes, if you live in an apartment. RWA approval is required since installation usually involves running a dedicated cable through common areas, and this approval should be sought well before your delivery date to avoid delays.

What happens if my home’s sanctioned load is too low for a 7.2kW charger?

You’ll need to apply to your electricity board for a load increase before the full-capacity wall box can be installed, a process that can take a few weeks, so it’s worth checking your sanctioned load as soon as you book the car.
