The FASTag annual pass for private vehicles in India will cost ₹3,075 from April 1 after a 2.5 percent increase in the fee. The annual pass currently costs ₹3,000, and the revision means vehicle owners will pay ₹75 more for the yearly toll payment facility.
The price adjustment is part of the annual toll rate revision that takes place at the beginning of the financial year. The FASTag annual pass was introduced to simplify toll payments for private vehicle owners who frequently travel on national highways.
With the annual pass, drivers of private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans can travel through toll plazas without paying toll charges for each trip individually. Instead, they make a single yearly payment and use the pass for a limited number of toll crossings.
Under the current system, the FASTag annual pass allows up to 200 toll trips on national highways within one year of activation. Once the limit of 200 crossings is reached, the pass becomes inactive and the vehicle owner must either renew the pass or pay regular toll charges for future journeys.
The FASTag system uses radio frequency identification technology to enable automatic toll payments. A small electronic tag is placed on the vehicle’s windscreen, which communicates with scanners installed at toll plazas. When the vehicle passes through the toll gate, the system automatically deducts the toll amount from the linked account.
This automated process reduces waiting time at toll booths and improves traffic flow on highways. Over the past few years, FASTag has become the primary method of toll payment on national highways across India.
The annual pass scheme was introduced to provide additional convenience to regular highway users. For people who frequently travel between cities or use national highways for daily commuting, the pass offers a simpler way to manage toll payments.
However, the scheme is available only for private vehicles. Commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses and goods carriers are not eligible for the annual pass and must continue paying toll charges per trip.
Motorists can purchase or renew the annual pass through official online platforms linked to the FASTag system. Once the payment is completed, the pass is activated and connected to the vehicle’s FASTag account.
The increase in the annual pass fee is relatively small compared with the total cost of highway travel, but it reflects the routine toll rate adjustments implemented every year.
Despite the price hike, the FASTag annual pass is expected to remain popular among frequent highway users because it provides convenience, faster toll crossings and simplified payment management for long-distance road travel.
