Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has placed an order for 1,085 electric buses with Olectra Greentech in a contract valued at approximately ₹1,800 crore. The development is significant as it marks one of the larger state-level electric bus procurements in India, reinforcing the push toward electrifying public transport fleets.

The order is part of TGSRTC’s broader strategy to expand its electric mobility footprint across urban and intercity routes in Telangana. By adding over a thousand new electric buses, the corporation aims to reduce fuel dependency, lower operational emissions and modernise passenger transport infrastructure.

Olectra Greentech, which specialises in manufacturing electric buses for Indian public transport undertakings, will supply the vehicles under agreed delivery timelines. The buses are expected to be deployed in phases, supporting fleet replacement and expansion plans.

The financial size of the contract, estimated at ₹1,800 crore, highlights the growing scale of electric bus adoption in India. State transport undertakings are increasingly shifting toward battery-electric solutions as operating economics improve and policy support continues at both central and state levels.

Electric buses offer lower running costs compared to diesel-powered vehicles over the long term, particularly in high-utilisation urban operations. Reduced noise levels and zero tailpipe emissions also contribute to improved urban air quality, making them suitable for city deployments.

For Olectra, the order strengthens its position in the domestic electric bus manufacturing segment. Large fleet orders from state transport corporations provide production visibility and reinforce capacity utilisation at manufacturing facilities.

TGSRTC has been gradually increasing the share of electric buses in its fleet in recent years. The latest order significantly accelerates that transition, potentially placing Telangana among states with a higher concentration of electric public transport vehicles.

Deployment of the buses will depend on infrastructure readiness, including charging facilities and route planning. As states continue to invest in charging depots and grid upgrades, large-scale electrification of bus fleets is becoming operationally feasible.

With this order, TGSRTC signals continued commitment to sustainable public transport, while Olectra consolidates its role as a key supplier in India’s expanding electric mobility ecosystem.
