Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has confirmed plans to enter India’s fast-growing electric two-wheeler segment, with the launch of its electric scooters scheduled for the second half of 2026. The announcement marks a significant expansion of the brand’s India strategy beyond electric cars.
The timeline was officially confirmed on January 24, 2026, with the company indicating that the festive season later this year could be the preferred launch window to maximise consumer reach and market impact.
VinFast will manufacture its India-bound electric scooters at its Thoothukudi facility in Tamil Nadu, where the company has already established electric car production lines. A dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing line is being developed at the same plant, with a projected annual capacity of up to 10 lakh units, enabling large-scale production and localisation.
According to company officials, the upcoming electric scooters will be India-specific products, designed after evaluating local road conditions, usage patterns, pricing expectations, and competition. The focus will be on balancing performance, durability, and affordability, while ensuring competitive positioning in a highly contested market.
VinFast is also in discussions with multiple Indian suppliers to localise key components, including battery packs, electric motors, and body components. The localisation strategy aims to reduce costs, improve supply chain resilience, and enable eligibility for government incentive schemes such as PLI and PM E-DRIVE.
The company already offers a range of electric scooters in global markets and is expected to adapt select platforms for Indian consumers. These scooters will compete directly with established electric two-wheeler models such as Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather Energy, and Ola Electric.
VinFast’s entry into the electric scooter segment comes at a time when India’s two-wheeler EV market is witnessing rapid adoption, driven by rising fuel costs, improved charging infrastructure, and increasing government support for clean mobility.
With electric scooter manufacturing integrated into its Tamil Nadu plant and aggressive localisation plans, VinFast aims to establish a strong footprint in India’s high-volume two-wheeler EV market while complementing its electric car portfolio.
