Yamaha’s XSR 155 continues to attract attention in the premium 150cc motorcycle segment for one key reason it attempts to balance fuel efficiency with performance without leaning too heavily toward either extreme. Recent road test data and real-world riding feedback show how this balance plays out in everyday use.

Powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), the XSR 155 produces around 18 bhp and 14.2 Nm of torque. These figures place it among the more powerful motorcycles in its displacement class, especially when paired with a six-speed gearbox. Performance delivery is tuned to feel relaxed at low speeds while becoming noticeably stronger once engine revs rise.

In city riding conditions, the motorcycle operates largely in its low-RPM valve timing mode. This allows smoother throttle response and controlled fuel consumption during stop-and-go traffic. Under such usage, real-world mileage figures tend to settle in the mid-40 km/l range, depending on riding style and traffic density.

As revs climb beyond the mid-range, the VVA system switches valve timing to prioritise airflow and power delivery. This is where the XSR 155’s performance character becomes evident. Acceleration improves significantly above 7,000 rpm, allowing confident overtakes and sustained highway cruising. Despite this, fuel efficiency does not drop sharply unless the engine is consistently kept at high revs.

Highway tests indicate that the motorcycle can comfortably cruise between 80 and 100 km/h without excessive strain. At these speeds, mileage remains relatively stable compared to aggressive riding, showing that performance is not achieved at the cost of constant fuel loss. The six-speed transmission plays a key role here by keeping engine rpm lower during steady cruising.

The relatively light kerb weight further contributes to this balance. With less mass to move, the engine requires less effort during normal riding, helping maintain efficiency while still delivering brisk responses when pushed.

Overall, available data suggests that the Yamaha XSR 155 does not force riders to choose strictly between mileage and performance. Instead, it adjusts its behaviour based on riding conditions, offering efficiency during everyday use and stronger performance when demanded.
