Mahindra Racing has officially announced its commitment to the Formula E Gen4 era, securing its position as a manufacturer in the fully electric racing series through 2030. This decision comes as Mahindra aims to leverage its experience in the competitive landscape of electric motorsports, which it has participated in since Formula E’s inception in 2013. Meanwhile, Mahindra is also expanding its EV presence on the consumer side with models like the Mahindra XEV 9S, reflecting a holistic approach to electric mobility.

In a significant move, Mahindra Racing joins other notable manufacturers like Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, and Lola in showcasing its commitment to the upcoming Gen4 regulations, effective from 2026. This era promises new innovations and technologies, furthering the development of electric vehicle performance. Mahindra’s decision comes after thorough evaluations of its future role, reaffirming its dedication to being a full manufacturer rather than shifting to a customer team.

Frederic Bertrand, CEO and Team Principal of Mahindra Racing, emphasized the need to maintain manufacturer status to enhance performance levels and create synergies between the racing division and Mahindra’s automotive sector. This includes developing advanced technologies that may eventually influence mainstream EVs, such as the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase competitor segment where performance and innovation matter.

Following a promising finish in Season 11, where Mahindra secured fourth in the teams’ championship, the organization seeks to capitalize on this momentum. The upcoming Season 12, beginning December 6 with the Sao Paulo E-Prix, will feature the team’s new M12Electro race car. The model carries the Born EV branding, characteristic of Mahindra’s consumer EV line-up, including products such as the XEV 9S.

According to R Velusamy, Chairman of Mahindra Racing, Formula E serves as a robust platform for technological advancements. “Our ambition only grows stronger. Continuing this journey until 2030 is a testament to our belief in the sport, electrification, and India’s rightful position in global sustainable mobility initiatives.”

Gen4 Era: Key Advancements

The Gen4 era promises several exciting changes:

  • Race cars generating up to 815hp with Attack Mode
  • All-wheel drive capabilities
  • Improved aerodynamics
  • Battery capacity increasing from 47kWh to 55kWh
  • Energy recuperation rising from 600kW to 700kW

These upgrades provide teams with greater flexibility in energy management, improving competitiveness and technical depth.

Given Mahindra’s broader EV strategy — which includes performance research from Formula E and consumer-focused products — their future offerings, alongside high-end electric vehicles like the BMW iX1 LWB, are set to benefit from this technology exchange.

With these advancements and Mahindra’s unwavering commitment, the future of electric motorsport looks promising. The Indian manufacturer is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable mobility through high-performance racing.
