Kia has expanded the variant lineup of the 2026 Kia Sonet in India by introducing more affordable trims that now offer automatic transmission options. The key highlight of the update is that buyers can now access diesel automatic and turbo-petrol dual-clutch automatic versions at prices below ₹10 lakh, making these powertrain options more accessible than before.
This move is expected to attract buyers who want the convenience of an automatic gearbox but previously had to opt for higher-priced variants to get it.
Diesel 6-Speed Automatic Now Offered in Lower Variants
One of the biggest updates is the introduction of the 1.5-litre diesel engine paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic (6AT) in a more affordable variant.
Earlier, this engine-gearbox combination was mostly limited to higher trims of the Sonet. With the new update, Kia has brought the diesel automatic option closer to the ₹10 lakh price bracket, making it more appealing for buyers looking for a powerful yet convenient compact SUV.
The diesel engine continues to be a popular choice among Indian buyers because of its strong torque and efficiency, especially for long drives and highway use.
Turbo-Petrol 7-Speed DCT Also Gets a Cheaper Entry Point
Along with the diesel automatic, Kia has also introduced a turbo-petrol engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (7DCT) in a lower trim.
This change means buyers who prefer the sporty 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox can now purchase it at a significantly lower price than before.
The turbo-petrol engine is known for offering a more engaging driving experience thanks to its strong acceleration and smooth automatic gearbox.
Aimed at Strengthening Sonet’s Position in the Compact SUV Segment
The compact SUV segment in India is one of the most competitive categories, featuring strong rivals. By introducing automatic transmission options at a lower price point, Kia aims to increase the appeal of the Sonet for a wider group of customers.
Automatic vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in Indian cities due to heavy traffic and the convenience they offer during daily commutes. Bringing these options under ₹10 lakh could make the Sonet an even more attractive choice for urban buyers.
