Rs 10 lakh gets you into some genuinely well-equipped sub-4m SUVs right now, though how far it stretches depends heavily on which one you’re looking at. Some of these hit that budget only in their base variant with cloth seats and steel wheels. Others get you most of the way up their range, airbags, touchscreen and all. This guide compares the real starting prices and what you actually get, so you’re not choosing based on a badge alone.

Quick Comparison: Starting Prices and Key Numbers

Tata NexonRs 7.40 lakh1.2L turbo petrol, 1.5L diesel, CNG5-star Global NCAP
Maruti BrezzaRs 7.40 lakh1.0L turbo petrol, 1.5L petrol, CNG5-star Bharat NCAP
Kia SonetRs 7.41 lakh1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbo petrol, 1.5L dieselNot yet Bharat NCAP tested

Tata PunchRs 5.59 lakh1.2L petrol, CNG5-star Global NCAP
Mahindra XUV 3XORs 7.79 lakh1.2L turbo petrol (2 states of tune), diesel5-star Global NCAP
Hyundai VenueRs 8.00 lakh1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbo petrol, 1.5L dieselNot yet Bharat NCAP tested

Every one of these lists a starting price under Rs 10 lakh, but that base variant often skips features you’d actually want daily. Treat the table as a starting point, not the whole decision.

Tata Nexon: The Safety-First Default

The Nexon has been the segment’s safety benchmark for years, and it still is. It carries a 5-star Global NCAP rating, and even reasonably-priced variants come with a decent count of airbags and ESC as standard. Where it stumbles a bit is cabin space at the back, which is best suited to two adults rather than three, and the ride can feel firm over sharp broken patches compared to some rivals.

The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is the pick of the engine range for most buyers, punchy enough for city overtakes without needing to work the gearbox hard. If you’re specifically shopping under Rs 10 lakh, you’re looking at manual or AMT variants of the turbo-petrol rather than the pricier 7-speed DCT.

Maruti Brezza: Where Mileage and Service Network Win

Maruti’s after-sales network is genuinely unmatched in India, and that alone pushes a lot of buyers toward the Brezza regardless of what a spec sheet says. The 2026 facelift adds a new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that undercuts the 1.5-litre NA petrol on price while offering more torque, and the CNG variant remains one of the most fuel-cost-efficient options in this entire list if you have access to CNG refuelling infrastructure.

What you don’t get, even at the top end, is ADAS. Rivals like the Nexon, Venue, and XUV 3XO offer at least Level-1 or Level-2 driver assistance features; the Brezza skips this entirely. If active safety tech genuinely matters to you over brand trust and mileage, that’s a real gap to weigh.

Kia Sonet: Feels Premium, Costs You Rear Legroom

Step inside a Sonet and it genuinely feels a class above its price point, sharp screens, good plastic quality, a cabin that doesn’t feel like it was built to a budget. The trade-off sits in the back seat, which has the tightest rear legroom in this comparison. If you’re regularly carrying taller adults in the rear, test that specifically before you commit.

The Sonet also offers the widest engine spread here: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel with a smooth automatic option. That range gives you flexibility that a single-engine lineup can’t match.

Skoda Kylaq: The Newest Entrant, Still Building Trust

Skoda’s newest sub-4m SUV brings genuinely solid build quality and a well-sorted chassis, closely related to the Kushaq underneath. It’s offered with a single 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, so there’s no diesel or naturally aspirated option if you were hoping for one.

Being the newest player here, it hasn’t built the multi-year ownership track record that Maruti or Hyundai have in this segment, and it’s yet to be tested by Bharat NCAP. If long-term reliability data matters more to you than day-one feature count, that’s worth factoring in.

Tata Punch: Technically a Micro-SUV, But Belongs on This List

The Punch sits a notch below the others here on size and starts meaningfully cheaper, from Rs 5.59 lakh for the base variant, up to Rs 10.67 lakh at the top. It carries the same 5-star Global NCAP safety credentials as its bigger sibling the Nexon, and its compact footprint makes it genuinely easy to park in tight city spaces.

Where it gives ground is highway manners. Pickup can feel a touch slow once you’re past city speeds, and the smaller dimensions mean less outright cabin and boot space than the true sub-4m SUVs on this list. If your driving is mostly city-bound with the occasional highway trip, that’s a fair trade for the lower price.

Mahindra XUV 3XO: The Roomiest Cabin Here

At 1,821mm wide with a 2,600mm wheelbase, the XUV 3XO is both the widest and has the longest wheelbase in this segment, which translates directly into the roomiest cabin of the group. It’s also the only one here offering rear disc brakes as standard, a genuine mechanical advantage most buyers never think to check.

The turbo-petrol comes in two states of tune (110 bhp and 129 bhp), giving you a choice between efficiency-leaning and performance-leaning variants of essentially the same engine. If interior space is your top priority and you don’t mind Mahindra’s slightly less extensive service network compared to Maruti or Hyundai, this is worth a serious look.

Hyundai Venue: Reliable, But Rear Seat Space Isn’t Its Strength

The Venue remains Hyundai’s best-selling SUV in India for good reason, dependable, well-built, and backed by a strong dealer network. It shares its 120hp, 172Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with the Sonet and Syros, and offers a 7-speed DCT option that’s genuinely smooth in stop-start traffic.

Like the Sonet, rear seat space is the compromise, it’s adequate but not class-leading. Fog lights are also missing from the Venue’s lineup, a small but noticeable omission when several rivals include them even at lower trims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sub-4m SUV under Rs 10 lakh has the best safety rating?

The Tata Nexon and Tata Punch both carry 5-star Global NCAP ratings, currently the strongest tested safety credentials in this specific price bracket among the models compared here.

Which of these SUVs offers the best fuel efficiency?

The Maruti Brezza offers the strongest mileage figures in this comparison on its 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine, and its CNG variant pushes running costs even lower for high-mileage city driving.

Do any sub-4m SUVs under Rs 10 lakh come with ADAS?

Yes, but usually only from certain variants upward. The Nexon, Venue, XUV 3XO, and Syros offer ADAS features on at least some trims, while the Brezza and Kylaq don’t offer it at all currently.

Is the Tata Punch really comparable to the other SUVs on this list?

It’s smaller and technically classified as a micro-SUV rather than a full sub-4m SUV, but its price range overlaps significantly with this segment and it’s cross-shopped often enough to include here.
