India Passenger Vehicle Retail Hits Record High in February 2026

March 5, 2026

India’s passenger vehicle retail market recorded its strongest February performance in 2026, reflecting sustained consumer demand across both urban and rural regions. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), passenger vehicle retail sales reached 3,94,768 units in February 2026, setting a new record for the month.

The strong performance highlights the resilience of India’s automotive sector. Continued demand for personal mobility, improved financing options, and better rural income conditions have supported vehicle purchases across several regions of the country.

Passenger Vehicle Retail Reaches Record Level

Passenger vehicle retail sales in February 2026 stood at 3,94,768 units, representing a year-on-year growth of about 26 percent compared with the same month last year. This marks the highest-ever passenger vehicle retail figure recorded for February in India.

Despite the strong annual growth, sales declined slightly compared with January 2026 levels. This month-on-month change is generally considered normal in the automobile industry because January often sees higher buying activity as customers make purchases at the beginning of the calendar year.

Overall, the February data confirms that demand in the passenger vehicle segment remains stable and healthy as the financial year approaches its closing months.

Rural Markets Driving Growth

One of the most notable trends in February was the strong performance of rural markets. Rural passenger vehicle retail sales recorded growth of more than 34 percent year-on-year, significantly higher than the roughly 21 percent growth seen in urban markets.

Improved agricultural income, favourable crop conditions, and better vehicle financing availability have supported purchasing power in rural regions. As a result, more buyers in smaller towns and rural areas are entering the passenger vehicle market.

Industry observers also point out that rural demand has begun to support the recovery of entry-level cars and compact vehicles, segments that had previously experienced slower growth as customers shifted toward SUVs.

Industry Outlook for the Coming Months

The record February performance comes at a time when India’s automobile industry continues to show steady momentum. Strong retail demand, expanding dealership networks, and new product launches across segments are helping sustain growth.

Dealers have reported stable enquiry levels, particularly in regions where infrastructure development and income growth are improving purchasing power.

As the financial year approaches its end, the industry typically sees additional buying activity driven by year-end offers and customer demand for new vehicle registrations. With demand remaining steady across multiple segments, the passenger vehicle market is expected to maintain positive momentum in the coming months.
