Maharashtra recorded the highest commercial vehicle sales in India during the third quarter of FY2025-26, accounting for 15.9 percent of total national sales, according to official industry data. The state outperformed all others in the October to December period, reinforcing its position as the country’s leading market for commercial vehicles.
This development matters for India because commercial vehicle demand is closely linked to economic activity. Higher sales typically reflect stronger freight movement, infrastructure execution, industrial production and logistics demand. Maharashtra’s continued dominance signals sustained transport and distribution activity in one of the country’s most industrialised regions.
The state’s performance is supported by its extensive highway network, dense industrial clusters and major port infrastructure. With ports such as Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port handling significant cargo volumes, there is consistent demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles used in container transport, bulk cargo movement and long-haul freight operations.
Gujarat ranked second in Q3 FY2025-26 with a 9.1 percent share of commercial vehicle sales. Uttar Pradesh followed at 8.3 percent, reflecting growing freight and agricultural transport demand in northern India. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also remained among the top-performing states, with shares of 8.2 percent and 7.0 percent respectively, supported by manufacturing and industrial activity.
Rajasthan and Haryana recorded notable contributions as well, benefiting from their strategic positions along major national freight corridors. These states play a key role in connecting production hubs with consumption centres across north and west India.
Beyond the top-ranked states, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala each accounted for more than three percent of total national commercial vehicle sales in the quarter. This indicates broader demand distribution across regions rather than concentration in only a few industrial states.
At a regional level, the western zone emerged as the strongest contributor to commercial vehicle demand during Q3 FY2025-26, supported by Maharashtra and neighbouring states. The momentum in the region was also visible in smaller transport segments, with Gujarat Leads Three-Wheeler Sales in Q3 FY2025-26 highlighting sustained automotive demand across western India.
Commercial vehicles include light commercial vehicles used for urban goods distribution as well as medium and heavy trucks deployed for long-distance freight, mining, construction and infrastructure projects. State-wise sales performance therefore reflects both regional economic activity and nationwide supply chain movements.
The third quarter also coincides with a period when fleet operators often expand or renew their vehicle stock ahead of year-end business cycles. This seasonal factor, combined with infrastructure and logistics demand, contributed to Maharashtra’s leading position during the period.
With Q3 FY2025-26 data confirming Maharashtra’s dominance, the state remains central to India’s commercial transport landscape, underscoring its importance in supporting national freight and industrial growth.
